The Clean Fiction Conundrum

More than ever, parents (and kids) want to find clean fiction books that they can enjoy and feel good about reading. And, it should come as no surprise that finding wholesome books to read has become incredibly difficult.

It’s no secret that authors today are pushing the limits on the content they write–and who they are marketing that content to. What might have caused an adult to cringe thirty years ago is now being openly flaunted in our schools and libraries. Physical romance isn’t just the norm in young adult reading, it’s expected. Violence and disturbing dialogue are peddled as edgy and artistic, and positive spiritual values are mocked as a thing of the past.

The mantra of “kids only want relevant and real” has been the aim of many popular authors today, and often results in a perpetual moving of the line between what is appropriate and not in approved reading material for young readers. It has become so bad, in fact, that the outlandish and taboo topics are not only considered acceptable, they are considered healthy, and in some cases–necessary for the mental stability of kids.

As these books quickly seep into the young adult stacks at the library, attentive parents are scrambling to find good fiction resources for their voracious readers.

Fortunately, there has been a rise in Christian and value-oriented mainstream authors that have dedicated themselves to producing clean, exciting fiction.

As publishers, we have had the privilege to meet (or publish) some of these authors. We know them, and we trust them because they hold many of the same spiritual values that we do. Below is a short list of resources that you can lock into your favorites when looking for that next fantasy or adventure series for your child to devour:
